Indonesia's original Telo surf outpost. Fifteen years of putting people in the water of their lives.
The Telo (sometimes "Tello") archipelago sits 130km off the west coast of North Sumatra, Indonesia — a chain of 47 islands scattered across the Indian Ocean. It's remote. Genuinely remote. The only way in is a private charter flight from Padang.
That remoteness is the point. While the Mentawais saw an explosion of boat traffic and crowded lineups, the Telos remained largely untouched — partly because of the distance, partly because the right people were looking after it.
Telo Island Lodge was established in 2009 as a small, purpose-built surf operation on the island of Sibaranun. The founders had one idea: create the best possible platform for accessing the Telo Islands' uncrowded waves, without the discomfort of a boat charter or the crowds of the Mentawais.
What started as a simple lodge with a few rooms and a speedboat has grown into one of Indonesia's most respected surf resorts — but the ethos hasn't changed. Small groups. Local crew. Maximum time in the water.
"What makes the Lodge magic is the fact that it is like staying at a mate's place who lives in paradise, can cook gourmet food, lets you leave your mess everywhere and shows you where the best surf is."Returning Guest
The Telo Islands are home to a small, tight-knit community of Indonesian families who live a largely traditional lifestyle — fishing, farming, and navigating the same waters our speedboats cross daily.
We're not just visitors here. The lodge employs local staff, supports the village school and church in Sibaranun, and has built lasting relationships with the community over 15+ years. When you take the village bike tour, you'll see it firsthand — the smiles, the waves, the kids running alongside your scooter.
Our Community Work →Telo Island Lodge is owned and operated by Pegasus Lodges — a boutique hospitality company specializing in surf travel experiences in remote locations.
